Criticism of Fundamental Duties
Despite their noble intent, Fundamental Duties have attracted considerable criticism. Detractors argue that:
- They are non-justiciable, meaning there is no legal mechanism to enforce them, which renders them largely symbolic.
- The language used in enumerating the duties is often vague and open to multiple interpretations.
- They are seen by some as politically motivated, intended to inculcate a specific ideology rather than genuine civic responsibility.
- The absence of corresponding enforceable obligations on the State or penalties for non-compliance further diminishes their practical impact.
Critics contend that while the duties aim to promote patriotism and social discipline, their implementation remains superficial and largely dependent on voluntary citizen compliance.
