The Earth's crust is the outermost, solid layer of our planet. It varies in thickness from about 5 km under the oceans to up to 70 km under continents. The crust is composed mainly of a variety of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. It is the foundation upon which all terrestrial life exists and plays a critical role in tectonic processes.
