Description

Experts Committee of the Congress

Even before the Constituent Assembly was fully in place, the Indian National Congress formed an Experts Committee on July 8, 1946, to help lay the intellectual and procedural groundwork for constitution-making. Comprising eminent leaders such as Jawaharlal Nehru (Chairman), M. Asaf Ali, K.M. Munshi, N. Gopalaswami Ayyangar, K.T. Shah, D.R. Gadgil, Humayun Kabir, and K. Santhanam—with later co-option of Krishna Kripalani—the committee met in New Delhi and Bombay. Their discussions, recommendations, and draft notes on procedural rules and key constitutional issues significantly influenced the Assembly’s subsequent debates.

  • Formed in mid-1946 by the Congress to prepare draft materials.
  • Included leading political and legal figures who set the agenda.
  • Influenced key resolutions and procedural guidelines in the Assembly.
