The air which surrounds the Earth, and consists of three layers: the troposphere (6 to 10 km from the Earth’s surface), the stratosphere (50 km from the Earth’s surface), and the mesosphere and ionosphere, an ionised region of rarefied gases (1000 km from the Earth’s surface). The atmosphere comprises oxygen (21%), nitrogen (78%), carbon dioxide, argon, helium and other gases in minute quantities.
