The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) was established in 2005 under the Disaster Management Act to provide leadership and coordination in disaster management. Its primary objective is to formulate policies, plans, and guidelines to mitigate the impact of natural and man-made disasters. The NDMA is tasked with a wide range of functions including planning, coordination, capacity building, and research in disaster management.
In simple language, the NDMA works to prepare the country for disasters such as floods, earthquakes, and cyclones, and to coordinate relief efforts when disasters occur. It works in tandem with State Disaster Management Authorities and District Disaster Management Authorities to ensure a unified response across the country. Recent disasters have highlighted the importance of NDMA’s role in saving lives and reducing economic losses by implementing early warning systems and effective response strategies.
Additionally, the NDMA is involved in training and capacity building for disaster response, and it continues to evolve by incorporating lessons from recent events and technological advancements.
