The Indian Parliament is the supreme legislative body and is organized as a bicameral institution. Article 79 of the Constitution states that Parliament shall consist of the President and two Houses – the Lok Sabha (House of the People) and the Rajya Sabha (Council of States). This structure ensures that both the people and the states are represented in the law-making process.
Parliament is supported by permanent secretariats and various committees that aid in legislative scrutiny, debate, and oversight of the executive, thereby ensuring a balanced system of checks and accountability.
