The Directive Principles derive their moral and ideological sanction from the framers of the Constitution, who were influenced by Gandhian thought, socialist ideas, and a commitment to social justice. Enshrined in Part IV (Articles 36–51), these principles represent the aspirations of the people for a welfare state.
The underlying rationale is to guide the state in creating conditions that lead to an equitable distribution of resources and opportunities, even though these principles are not enforceable by law.
