Book: Parts of Speech

Adverbs modify verbs adjectives or other adverbs indicating how when where why or to what extent something occurs. Common examples are quickly yesterday there always and very. Many adverbs end in ly but some do not such as well or fast. Adverbs of manner describe how an action happens while adverbs of time and place specify when and where. They can also show degree or frequency as in quite often or rarely. Correct placement is essential to avoid ambiguity. By using adverbs sparingly and precisely speakers and writers add helpful detail and nuance to their sentences.
