Alkali Metals

Subject: Chemistry

Book: General Chemistry

Alkali metals are in Group 1 (except hydrogen) and include lithium, sodium, and potassium. They have one valence electron and are highly reactive, readily losing that electron to form +1 cations. Their reactivity increases down the group, leading to vigorous reactions with water to produce hydrogen gas (H2) and metal hydroxides (MOH). Alkali metals have low densities and are excellent reducing agents in various chemical processes.
