Anti-Markovnikov Reactions

Subject: Chemistry

Book: General Chemistry

Anti-Markovnikov reactions occur when the incoming group attaches to the less substituted carbon of an alkene (opposite to Markovnikov’s rule). This can happen via free radical mechanisms, such as in the hydroboration–oxidation of alkenes, leading to alcohols on the less substituted carbon. These reactions provide alternative synthetic pathways for obtaining specific regioisomers in organic synthesis.
