Central Vigilance Commission (CVC)

Subject: Polity

Book: Indian Polity by M. Laxmikanth

A statutory body (2003 Act) emerging from the Santhanam Committee’s recommendations to address corruption in the executive. The CVC supervises the vigilance administration in central government departments and public sector undertakings. It can inquire or cause inquiries into allegations of corruption, forwarding cases to the CBI or other agencies. The Commission, appointed by the President on the recommendation of a high-level committee, is meant to be an independent watchdog, though it lacks direct prosecution powers. By coordinating with departmental vigilance officers, it fosters a clean administrative culture, ensuring deterrence against bribery and misuse of public office.
