Directive Principles of State Policy (DPSP) – Overview

Subject: Polity

Book: Indian Polity by M. Laxmikanth

Outlined in Part IV (Articles 36–51), DPSPs are guidelines to the state in lawmaking and policy direction. They are non-justiciable but form the bedrock of India’s welfare state model. Derived from Ireland’s Constitution and Gandhian ideals, they encompass socio-economic justice, foreign policy, and administrative reforms. Courts often interpret them harmoniously with Fundamental Rights, shaping legislative priorities in areas like labor welfare, gender equality, and rural development. Although they lack direct enforceability, DPSPs influence policymaking at all levels, reflecting India’s aspiration to build an equitable and inclusive society.
