Endothermic vs. Exothermic

Subject: Chemistry

Book: General Chemistry

In an endothermic reaction, the system absorbs heat from surroundings (ΔH > 0). Examples include ice melting or the decomposition of calcium carbonate. In an exothermic reaction, the system releases heat to surroundings (ΔH < 0), such as combustion of fuels or oxidation of metals. Identifying whether a reaction is endothermic or exothermic helps in controlling temperature conditions and energy usage in laboratory and industrial settings.
