Prepositions

Subject: English

Book: English Grammar

A **preposition** shows a relationship between a noun (or pronoun) and other words in a sentence, often telling us where or when something happens. If you imagine a cat and a box, a preposition explains if the cat is **on** the box, **in** the box, or **beside** the box.

### Common Prepositions
- **Place**: “on,” “in,” “under,” “behind,” “next to.”
- **Time**: “at,” “before,” “after,” “during.”
- **Direction**: “to,” “from,” “towards,” “into.”

### Easy Examples for Kids
- “The book is **on** the table.” (where?)
- “We will meet **at** 5 PM.” (when?)
- “She walked **to** the store.” (direction)

### Tip
Ask yourself: “Where is something?” or “When is something happening?” The word that answers might be a preposition. For example, “I sleep **in** my bed,” “We play **during** recess.”

Prepositions are like signposts that tell us how nouns connect to the rest of the sentence.
