A financial committee of Lok Sabha tasked with examining budget estimates of government ministries, suggesting alternative policies or reorganization for efficiency. It checks whether funds are well laid out within the vote of the House. The committee, chaired traditionally by a ruling party MP, can propose improvements but not question government policies in principle. Often overshadowed by the PAC, the Estimates Committee’s role is to recommend cost-effective measures, prevent wasteful expenditure, and evaluate performance. Although it does not have powers to enforce changes, it draws attention to budgetary discipline and prudent resource allocation.
