Ionic Bonding

Subject: Chemistry

Book: General Chemistry

Ionic bonding occurs when electrons are transferred from a metal to a nonmetal, creating positively charged metal cations and negatively charged nonmetal anions. The electrostatic attraction between these oppositely charged ions holds the compound together. For example, in sodium chloride (NaCl), Na loses an electron to form Na+ and Cl gains an electron to form Cl–. Ionic compounds typically form crystal lattices, have high melting points, and conduct electricity when molten or dissolved.
