Reaction Coupling

Subject: Chemistry

Book: General Chemistry

Reaction coupling links a nonspontaneous reaction (positive ΔG) with a highly spontaneous one (negative ΔG) so the overall process is spontaneous. In biology, ATP hydrolysis (which has a large negative ΔG) frequently drives endergonic processes, such as muscle contraction or active transport. This principle is also used industrially, pairing unfavorable steps with exothermic ones to achieve net feasibility.
