Reaction Entropy

Subject: Chemistry

Book: General Chemistry

Reaction entropy (ΔSrxn) measures the change in disorder when reactants convert to products. Processes that produce more gas molecules or involve dissolution often increase entropy. Calculated from standard molar entropies, ΔSrxn guides understanding of spontaneity in combination with ΔH and temperature (using ΔG = ΔH – TΔS). Large increases in entropy can drive otherwise endothermic reactions to be spontaneous.
