Sessions of Parliament

Subject: Polity

Book: Indian Polity by M. Laxmikanth

Typically, Parliament meets in three sessions: Budget Session (Feb–May), Monsoon Session (July–Aug), and Winter Session (Nov–Dec). The President summons each session, while adjournment and prorogation are determined by the presiding officers. A “Sine Die” adjournment ends a session without fixing a further date. These sessions allow the legislature to enact laws, discuss policies, and hold the government accountable. The gap between sessions cannot exceed six months. Special sittings may be called for emergencies or urgent legislative needs. Understanding session dynamics is crucial to track parliamentary debates, question hour, and zero hour, reflecting the democratic practice of oversight and governance.
